Enhancing Food Security in the Winnipeg School Division

The Schroeder Foundation is working closely with the Province of Manitoba and the Winnipeg School Division to enhance food security for the city’s most vulnerable students and their families. Over $1.7 Million has been committed over 4 years to the Feeding the Future Fund, a dedicated initiative aimed at ensuring students have consistent access to healthy meals.

By providing both breakfast and lunch programs, the Foundation works to level the playing field for students, fostering an environment where every child can succeed, regardless of their background. As part of this commitment, the following initiatives have been outlined to enhance meal preparation, improve service delivery, and ensure that students can rely on a consistent, nutritious food source throughout the school year.

ONE-TIME FUNDING FOR EQUIPMENT: The Schroeder Foundation provided up to $50,000 in one-time funding to purchase necessary equipment that will enhance meal preparation and distribution facilities at six schools in the Winnipeg School Division.

ANNUAL FUNDING FOR FOOD PURCHASES: In addition, the Schroeder Foundation pledges $40,000 annually, for a period of four years, to fund food purchases for nine schools in the Winnipeg School Division. This ongoing support will directly benefit students by providing them with consistent access to nutritious meals, alleviating food insecurity and encouraging regular school attendance, which has been shown to improve overall academic performance.

Prior to partnering with the Province of Manitoba on their Universal Food Program, the Schroeder Foundation was already actively supporting food security initiatives within the Winnipeg School Division. For several years, the Foundation donated $40,000 annually to the food programs at Dufferin School and Norquay School, ensuring that students had access to nutritious meals. Additionally, it provided capital improvement funding to help enhance the facilities and infrastructure necessary to support these programs. The ongoing commitment to addressing food insecurity in local schools has been a cornerstone of our work, and the collaboration with the province and the Winnipeg School Division has only further strengthened our ability to make a meaningful impact.
